Vinos Lechuza is a family-owned winery, founded by Ray and Patty Magnussen, in 2005. 16 years later, daughter Kris Magnussen, is carrying on her family legacy with profound respect for the Valle de Guadalupe community.

On a trip to Baja in 2002, Kris’ parents asked locals for dinner recommendations, they were quickly directed to Laja. The roads being a bit trickier to navigate at that time, it was inevitable for them to get lost and so they asked for directions, they were kindly guided by Cuahtémoc, a Mexican winemaker who lived nearby. After enjoying a great meal they were inspired to visit Cuahtémoc in the daylight and ask about the property for sale next to his. A serendipitous moment that led them on a life-changing journey.

Ray planted his first vine in 2005 and by 2007 he had his first vintage. It was until 2012 when he invited Kris and his son-in-law Adam to join the family venture. Leading to the creation of Lechuza, meaning owl in Spanish, paying tribute to the first residents Kris’ parents found upon their arrival, the majestic owls that roamed the land.

As soon as we arrive, we are warmly greeted and welcomed by Kris who shared her experience as a daughter, wife, mother turned winemaker while she serves us an outstanding glass of Chardonnay describes it as white wine for the red wine drinker.

Also she invited us into her underground wine cellar and we are automatically transported to a magical place where time stands still. She pours us a glass of Amantes meaning Lovers in Spanish, the first wine made after her father’s passing, in honor of the love her parents had for one another, the love she and her husband Adam share, and their love for what they do.

A portrait of her father hangs above the cellar as his essence is present in Kris’ hospitality and her dazzling personality. “There’s no need to save it for a special occasion, the best time to enjoy a glass of wine is in the present”.

Vinos Lechuza’s prices range from $20-$80 dollars, they are available in a variety of locations in Mexico and the U.S., they can also be conveniently purchased and shipped directly to your doorstep through
