Today we will tell you about a place with a lot of soul, a small coffee shop in the city but with a great story that caught our attention: the Betty Brew Café.

We talked with Ivan Trujillo, one of the owners of this family business that besides bringing good coffee to the northern part of Ensenada, is a place that pays tribute to his mother, who always instilled in her children the importance of starting their own business and the great value of working as a family.

After running a coffee shop in the tourist area for many years, this ended when they were affected by the pandemic and Café Italia had no choice but to close its doors. However, the teachings of the matriarch of the Trujillo family remained very present in them and from this came the idea of starting over, but now, not in the tourist area, but closer to the locals. Thus was born at the beginning of this year, this beautiful project, what Ivan calls “the neighborhood cafe”: good coffee, family, friends and a space for art.

With a great career as a professional musician, being trumpet player for Nortec Collective, B-Side Players and in his personal projects, Ivan Trujillo Ensamble and La Covacha Big Band, his passion and great vocation for art has led him to serve as an artistic promoter in the state. Founder of the Ensenada Art Walk, La Covacha Foro and currently, the Instituto Contemporáneo de Música de Baja California (ICMBC). Betty Brew could not make an exception to this call. With museums and galleries closed due to the pandemic, they turned the walls and ceilings of the cafeteria into an exhibit to display different collections by local artists. On our visit, we were able to appreciate a collection of weaving.

Unmistakable as you walk down Calle Bronce, thanks to the beautiful mural by the talented Esther Gámez, Betty Brew is a small coffee shop founded on family values, with delicious coffee with no pretensions other than having a good time, promoting art for everyone to enjoy.

With deep respect, we thank you for making this a very special place for the community honoring the legacy left by Mrs. Betty.
